What is an NIE?
A unique ID number (format: X-1234567-A) assigned by the Spanish National Police. It stays with you for life and never changes. Every foreigner who interacts with Spanish bureaucracy needs one, whether you're buying property, getting a job, or just signing a phone contract.
Common confusion: NIE is not the same as a TIE (the physical residency card for non-EU residents) or an NIF (your tax ID, which for foreigners equals your NIE number). The NIE is the number itself. The TIE is the plastic card. The NIF is how the tax office refers to you.
When do you need it?
Short answer: almost immediately after arriving. Here's what's blocked without an NIE:
- Opening a Spanish bank account
- Signing a rental contract
- Starting employment or freelance work
- Registering for Social Security
- Buying or selling property
- Setting up utilities (electricity, internet)
- Paying taxes or applying for Beckham Law
- Buying a car
Get it as early as possible. Every week you delay creates a domino effect blocking everything else.
How to get NIE: step by step
Step 1: Book an appointment (Cita Previa)
You cannot walk in without an appointment. Book through the official portal: sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es.
- Select your province
- Select the procedure: "Certificados UE" (EU citizens) or "Asignacion de NIE" (non-EU)
- Enter your passport details
- Pick an available date
Slots go fast in Barcelona and Madrid. New slots usually appear on Monday mornings around 8am. Select "Cualquier oficina" (any office) to see more options. Expect a 2-4 week wait in big cities.
Do not use third-party booking sites that charge fees. The government portal is free.
Step 2: Prepare your documents
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Form EX-15 | Filled out in Spanish, signed. Bring two copies. |
| Passport | Original + photocopy of the bio page. Must be valid. |
| Justification letter | Why you need the NIE: job offer, property purchase contract, rental agreement, etc. "I might need it" is not enough. |
| Modelo 790 (Codigo 012) | Fee payment receipt. Must be paid at a bank before your appointment. |
| Passport photos | 1-2 recent photos. Some offices require them, some don't. Bring them anyway. |
Bring originals AND photocopies of everything. There is no photocopier at the police station. One missing document means rebooking and waiting another 2-4 weeks.
Step 3: Pay the fee
Fill in Modelo 790 Codigo 012 on the National Police website, print it, and pay at any Spanish bank. The fee is approximately €12. You cannot pay at the police station.
Step 4: Attend your appointment
Go to the designated police station (Comisaria de Policia) or Foreigners Office (Oficina de Extranjeria). Submit your documents. Some offices issue the NIE on the spot. Others take 1-3 weeks and mail it or let you pick it up.
Getting NIE from abroad
If you're not in Spain yet, you can apply at a Spanish consulate or embassy in your country. Same documents, plus proof of residence in the consular area. Processing takes 15-45 days, longer than applying in Spain.
You can also send someone to apply on your behalf in Spain with an apostilled notarized power of attorney (poder notarial). Useful if you're buying property and need the NIE before arriving.
How long does it take?
| Step | Timeframe |
|---|---|
| Appointment wait | 1-4 weeks (longer in Barcelona/Madrid) |
| Processing after submission | Same day to 3 weeks |
| Via consulate abroad | 15-45 days |
Since 2024, if the administration doesn't respond within 20 working days, your application is considered automatically approved (positive administrative silence).
Common mistakes
- Not booking the appointment. Walk-ins are not accepted.
- Using scam booking sites. Only use the official government portal. It's free.
- Forgetting photocopies. No copier at the police station. Bring copies of everything.
- Vague justification. You need a specific reason with supporting documents (contract, job offer).
- Not paying the fee before the appointment. Modelo 790 must be paid at a bank beforehand. They don't take cash at the office.
- Wrong procedure selected. EU citizens pick "Certificados UE", non-EU pick "Asignacion de NIE". Wrong selection means wasted trip.
- Thinking NIE = residency. The NIE is just an ID number. It does not authorize you to live or work in Spain.
Tips for getting an appointment faster
- Check the booking portal Monday mornings around 8am when new slots appear
- Try smaller cities near you. Girona, Tarragona, or Toledo often have slots when Barcelona and Madrid are full
- Select "Cualquier oficina" to see all available offices
- Try different browsers and clear cookies if the site gives errors
What to do after you get your NIE
The NIE unlocks everything else. Once you have it, move through these steps:
- Empadronamiento (padron): register your address at your local town hall (ayuntamiento). Required for most next steps.
- Open a bank account: take your NIE, passport, and proof of address to any Spanish bank.
- Register with Social Security: needed before you can start working, whether employed or autonomo.
- Apply for Beckham Law (if eligible): you have 6 months from your Social Security registration. See our Beckham Law guide for details.
Bottom line
The NIE process is straightforward but unforgiving. Book your cita previa early, bring every document with photocopies, and pay Modelo 790 at a bank before your appointment. The whole thing costs €12 and takes 1-3 weeks. Do it first, because nothing else in Spain moves without it.
